Give Respect, Support, Say Thank You to War Heroes on November 11

Children can honor military heroes on November 11 by showing respect, support, and appreciation. In this way, young citizens can celebrate Veteran's Day.

Saying “thank you” to a local veteran is one important way that kids can honor a nation’s war hero on Veteran’s Day, November 11 (sometimes referred to as Armistice Day). Children will find that this simple gesture may be the most treasured among veterans. For those in the military who are still actively fighting, sending notes/letters of thanks may also provide a huge boost in morale.

Military men and women will appreciate knowing that the young citizens at home and their parents truly support them. In this article, parents, teachers, and others may find inspiration and motivation with more ideas on how to honor veterans on Veteran’s Day.

Letter Writing, Essays to Veterans and Active Soldiers

Correspondence with troops overseas is something that is welcomed by veterans and those on active duty. A simple Veteran’s Day “thank you” note, letter, or a more extensive essay about how important the sacrifices of veterans and the military are to all people are great ways to honor veterans on Veteran’s Day (see below for topic ideas). Teachers and scout leaders can include a Veteran’s Day essay writing exercise in their classrooms and/or meetings.

Host a Veteran’s Day Breakfast

On Veteran’s Day, high schools in conjunction with community leaders can honor local veterans by hosting a Veteran’s Day breakfast. Send invitations or make personal phone calls to VFW and American Legion groups. Send a press release to local newspapers. Hang flyers around the city or town where the event will take place. Invite veterans, military men and women, and their families to the breakfast. While there, make certain to thank them for their service and immense sacrifices.

Attend Parade, Memorial Service Honoring Veterans

Many Veteran’s Day parades and memorial services will take place on November 11. Most will be in the morning. Since this is a national holiday, make a point to attend one of these ceremonies with the family. Talk to small children about what it means to be a veteran. Talk about freedom and the love of one’s country. Have a child personally thank a veteran and shake his or her hand.

Create an Online Memorial for a Veteran

Many people have family and close friends who have served in the military at one point or another. There are online programs available that allow anyone to post a thoughtful online memorial for veterans who have given their lives in the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. An online memorial would be a wonderful way of honoring a veteran with children on Veteran’s Day. Just make sure that all close relatives and family approve before it goes live.

When wondering how to properly honor veterans this November 11, remember that providing military heroes with support, appreciation, and respect on Veteran’s Day will be valued above all else. By simply saying “thank you”, writing a note, attending a memorial service, or stepping up support with a Veteran’s Day breakfast or online memorial, children can show their appreciation for those that serve the country and provide the freedoms that are enjoyed today.
