I voted for the Confederate Army in the poll, but want to clarify that my focus is primarily on the Army of Northern Virginia. That army, commanded for most of the war by Robert E. Lee, was truly the most remarkable "underdog" army in military history - scoring impressive victories against incredible odds on several occasions, and also (toward the end of the war) lasting longer even in the face of certain defeat than most armies would in similar circumstances.

I'm not a "Lost Cause" enthusiast, by the way. I think the South was wrong in the Civil War, but I think we need to give credit where it's due.

My second choice would be the Spartans at Thermopylae, but I think the movie "300" has artificially boosted their votes in this survey. happy
